Algemeen:

General:
The main focus within the collection, as you can find it on this website, is on "paper" sources. Books, magazines and championship brochure are the largest part of the collection. Besides these, there are also photo's, newspaper clippings, posters and match results. The main driver is the fascination for the very rich history of the game and sport of billiards. The first, ill documented sources, bring us back to the 14th century to a game "ground billiards" played outside. Also fascinating are the interface with sciences like mechanics and mathematics throughout the history.

Generally speaking one can state that billiards, in its many forms, was played as a game in the 17th and 18th century. Sources of this era are mainly books about games and passtimes that also dedicate a chapter to billiards. The oldest books I know of are mostly written in French and edited in France but also the Netherlands, soon to be followed by the English of which most books were published in London. Later on also the German, Americans, Spanish, Italian, ... would follow.  Other sources are books about the daily life, dictionnaries and legislation. Because playing games at the time was linked to gambling and business also the acting government would impose rules and legislation.

At the end of the 18th century, beginning of the 19th century the first books fully dedicated to the game of billiards would appear on the market. Due to the improvements of the material, e.g. the leather cue tip and rubber cushions, and the changes in society billiards sport would make its entrance in the 19th century. Besides books also newspapers, sporting and gaming magazines become an important source of information.

I'm also searching for billiard magazines (20th, 21st century), magazines about games and sport (19th century), books about billiards and games (17th, 18th, 19th century).
